Bring hands-on engineering to your Chanukah celebrations!

Join CIJE mentor Barbara Sehgal for a hands-on professional development workshop where you’ll learn to guide your students in designing and building moving automata—mechanical sculptures that come to life using gears, cams, cranks, and motors.

Through this interactive session, you’ll experience the lesson firsthand and gain practical strategies for implementing this Chanukah-themed activity in your own classroom. Explore how motion, force, and energy work together while discovering how to help students transform circular motion into movement that lifts, spins, and dances.

You’ll leave with ready-to-use lesson materials and the confidence to guide your students through this engaging intersection of engineering principles, physics, and creative expression.

This is an example of a Chanukah-themed automata. Automata are machines, either physical or abstract, that are designed to operate automatically based on a predetermined set of instructions or rules.
